Addressing the Healthcare Gap in Rural Ontario

Fewer Healthcare Providers in Rural Areas
Only 8% of physicians in Canada serve rural areas. Additionally, many family doctors on the Peninsula are not accepting new patients and waitlists are estimated at over 5 years.

Lack of Access to Primary Care
Over 6.5 million Canadian adults—approximately 20% of the population—lack regular access to a family doctor or nurse practitioner.

Emergency Room Visits at an All-Time High
Ontarians without a family doctor are forced to seek non-emergency primary care in the ER.

Traveling Long Distances for Care
The average length of stay in a local ER for low-urgency patients is over 3 hours. On average patients wait 2.5 hours before initial MD assessment.
Over 130,000 Ontarians live more than 200 km from their family doctor, underscoring the challenges faced by rural residents.
